The Message By H.E. Mehmet Cahit Turhan, The Minister Of Transport And Infrasructure Of Republic Of Turkey, On The Occasion Of December 7th “International Civil Aviation Day”

On the occasion of December 7th International Civil Aviation Day, I sincerely wish all concerned institutions, organizations, and the ICAO member countries, especially the employees serving across global  aviation industry a happy International Civil Aviation Day.

The main purpose of international civil aviation is to ensure safe & secure and sustainable development of all aviation activities. Accordingly; aviation activities should be carried out in accordance with some certain guidelines and standards on both national and international basis. In this sense; December 7th when the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), to which we have been a member since 1945, was founded in 1944 in order to ensure smooth and systematical development of aviation globally is celebrated as the International Civil Aviation Day all around the world including our country.

Turkish civil aviation industry has achieved an epic success story in the last 15 years, and our country was granted to be a Member of the Council with the vote of the majority of the member states, the top-ranking decision-making body of ICAO, in 2016, which make this special day more meaningful for us. Setting off on our journey with the mottos "If you cannot access a destination, you cannot claim that it's yours" and "Air route is the route of public", we built new routes and bridges not only in the skies of our country but also in world skies, connecting the whole world together. We have mobilized all our resources to achieve greater successes and pass giant works down by striving steadfastly and persistently.

Transportation networks serve as the indicators showing not only the current status of development, but also the future potential of a country. Having the most developed global air transportation network and achieving a historical growth in the last 15 years, Turkey has achieved a growth rate of 10 percent in the last 15 years while the world average growth rate was reported around 5 percent across the civil aviation industry.  Thanks to the sustained efforts by our Ministry and Directorate General of Civil Aviation; Turkish Air Carriers now provide service to the entire world through the extensive flight network including flights to 317 destinations in 123 countries from our country which has executed Air Transport Agreements with 170 countries and attained the position of keystone for global aviation bridges.

Inauguration of Istanbul New Airport, which has crowned all these achievements and broadened our horizon for new achievements, on October 29, 2018 is an important indicator of the contribution provided by our country to development of the global aviation through not only the passenger number and aircraft traffic volume, but also in terms of promoting infrastructure of global civil aviation industry.
Our county will maintain its sustained efforts in line with the mission of ICAO “Country Left Behind” by reinforcing the regional and global partnerships, without giving and concession on the international standards to ensure safe and secure development of the international civil aviation.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere congratulations to all World Nations for a happy International Civil Aviation Day wishing the Global Civil Aviation community success in their mission to achieve "a sustainable, safe and secure global air transportation industry".

Kind regards,

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Turkey
Mehmet Cahit TURHAN
